I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the newly appointed Executive Officer for Recreation SA. I join Rec SA with an extensive background in Health, Fitness, Sport & Recreation Management, having 12 years’ experience working in the industry, 15 including my junior years.

My career in the industry began as a teenager working after school and on weekends at the local Roxby Downs Leisure centre. The centre in Roxby comprised of a pool, gym, squash courts and two indoor basketball courts along with many outdoor courts. I left Roxby at the age of 16 to attend boarding school at Westminster School here in Adelaide.

After finishing my year 12 studies, I completed my certificates III & IV in Fitness with the AIF at the age of 18 and began working as a gym instructor & personal trainer with EFM Health Clubs. I successfully ran my own personal training business out of home and as a rental for a period time, developing strong people management attributes and displaying exceptional leadership qualities.

At the age of 20, I commenced tertiary studies with the University of Queensland. During my studies I worked as a membership consultant with Genesis Health Clubs and once I completed my bachelors in applied sciences, I began working as a sales manager with Genesis and then Goodlife Health Clubs. During this period of employment, I acted as the manager of the Modbury Goodlife whilst the new Dernancourt facility was under construction.

My managerial skills continued to develop, and I received a role managing and setting up 24-hour gyms across the state with Snap Fitness. After 6 or 7 years, predominantly in the fitness sector, I journeyed back to where my career began (Community Sport and Recreation Sector) and I became the Manager of the St Clair Recreation Centre with CASA Leisure - where I remained the last 4 years.

St Clair was a multi-purpose rec centre with a strong community focus that consisted of 4 indoor courts, a 24-hour gym, a creche, group fitness, a boxing gym and many office spaces used by local sporting organisations.  The St Clair Rec Centre is now undergoing a full re-development which presented me with this exciting opportunity here at Recreation SA.

Outside of my career, I regularly attend the gym for personal fitness, play aussie rules football and I am an avid game fisherman and member of the Adelaide Game Fishing Club (AGFC). Sport, Fitness and Recreation is not only my career, but my life outside of work.

My wife and I have two beautiful young children and she is also in the industry as an Exercise Physiologist with Goodlife Health Clubs.

During my tenure at Rec SA, I hope to enforce our vision and mission statements by increasing active recreation in South Australia and adding new sectors to our already existing profile.

Along with continually providing strong leadership, support and advocacy to our members, state and regional communities. Some other key areas I will be focusing on include;

  • Establish stronger relationships with our members and industry sectors
  • Deliver improved events (Networking, CEC delivery) for our members
  • Increase our WAW memberships – Our aim is to have every state pool/aquatic facility as a member of the WAW public awareness campaign
  • Improve our non-government revenue to become self-sustainable
  • Add more profiles to Recreation SA as the peak industry body
  • Increase our media output in conjunction with Sport SA
  • Increasing our Rec SA memberships – organisational and individual

I will bring with me a wealth of passion, experience and knowledge to Recreation SA and I would like to thank the Rec SA board, specifically Alistair Baird and Rob Heinjus who have volunteered their time to help me settle in.

Also to the Recreation SA staff – Anthony, Helen and David who have made my transition much easier and caught me up with all things Rec SA.

Please feel free to contact me directly by email (eo@recreationsa.org) or phone (0415 45 559).

Kindest Regards, Stu Ferenci
